A day of travel

I sit here anxiously. Tomorrow I have a 22 hours of travel, i have to wake up early, and I know i won't be able to sleep tonight.

I leave Austin at 6:05 am -> memphis->detroit->frankfurt->dresden. Thats about 14 hours flying time and 8 hours of layover time.

I go straight to work once I arrive in dresden (yuck).

Let me tell you how a seasoned traveller does his packing (1 suitcase, 1 backpack, and laptop bag):

Suitcase Items
1) Do laundry (cause you know everything i own is dirty of course)
2) Drop armful of laundry into suitcase (cause I really only own about 1.5 weeks of clothing that is acceptable to wear in a business situation)
3) Bathroom gear (1 toothbrush, mello goo -hair gel, old spice sport - deoderant, crest -toothpaste) .... (undecided on shaving equipment at this time)
4) 1 pair of sneakers,
5) Metal studded punk rock belt (pack it, that shit sets off the metal detectors from far away)

Backpack items
1) IPOD (important to have a soundtrack when you are dodging slow movers in an airport)
2) Books (Fight club, 2 java books, "To Be the Man", the Ric Flair autobiography) useful for sitting in a hotel room with only 3 channels of german television, 1 channel of soft porn (also german), and cnn , also useful for the 2 hour european dinner excursions
3) Sketch pad, pencils and paper
4) Nyquil (for sleep induction in possible jet lag situations ) and aspirin

Laptop bag
1) laptop
2) digi camera
3) german electrical adapter

I think thats it. I try to travel as light as possible, but even as I write this, it seems like a lot.

p.s. The pixies concert was completely unbelievable. They sounded great live!! It was one hour with no delay between songs (a la Ramones). I read today they will be be appearing on Austin City Limits this season.

I work for IBM's consulting arm. I wrote a bunch of software customizations and have to test them out in a factory in Dresden. International work travel sounds much more glamorous than it actually is.......

It is fun to be in a different country, but the hours are pretty long and your body pretty much stays wrecked the whole time.
